Pair of earrings

Provenance and site: Panticapaeum (Kerch), Crimea, 2nd – 1st century BCE.

Gold.

L: 5.2 and 5.3 cm / weight 4.2 g and 4.1 g.

These disc-shaped earrings are in the form of rosettes supporting figures of Eros. One of the figures holds a cup in his left hand. It seems the rosette discs were originally painted in white enamel. The relatively coarse goldsmithing dates from the early Roman period and was modelled on popular Hellenistic themes.
